Obituary for Jerry Lee Armstrong

COLUMBIA. . .Jerry Lee Armstrong, a resident of Columbia, died Friday morning, April 21, 2023, at his home. He was 85.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Monday, April 24, 2023, in the First Baptist Church of Columbia with Pastor Vann Cooley officiating. Graveside services, with military honors, will follow in the Columbia City Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 10:00 until 11:00 A.M. Monday in the church sanctuary. Holman-Headland Mortuary & Cremations is in charge of arrangements.
Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions may be made to a favorite charity.
Mr. Armstrong was born and reared in Columbia, son of the late Andrew Sterling Armstrong and Nettie Belle Holmes Armstrong. At an early age, Mr. Armstrong enlisted in the U. S. Navy and served his country during the Vietnam War. He retired from the Navy with rank of Aviation Machinist’s Mate First Class and was a member of the Hurricane Hunter’s Squadron. He returned to Columbia in 1975. After retirement from the military, Mr. Armstrong was employed by Hayes International. He also retired from the City of Blakely as a Firefighter. Mr. Armstrong was a member of the First Baptist Church of Columbia and formerly served as a City Councilman for the City of Columbia. He was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth Rogers Armstrong, a son, Ricky Lee Armstrong, grandsons, Jacob Armstrong, Bubba Moody and Zachary James Van Voorhis, sisters, Frances and Ilene Armstrong, brothers, George Armstrong, Rhuben Armstrong, Rhudolph Armstrong and Lawrence Armstrong.
Surviving relatives include three daughters, Veronica Hughes (David), Dothan; Ronda Armstrong (Ed), Atlantic Beach, FL; and Paula Cloer (Jerry), Mayport, FL; three sons, William H. Lawson (Kathi), Webb, AL; Jerry Dean Armstrong, Charleston, SC; and Jeremy Armstrong (Tamara), Columbia; a sister, Martha Lene Adams, Columbia; eleven grandchildren, several great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
